Please join us for a session on
Guarding the Firm, Supporting the Person: A Strategic Approach to Substance Use in the Legal Workplace
presented by Abe Turner, MA, LPC, LCPC, a nationally certified counselor and a multi-state licensed mental health professional
Session Description:
Law firms run on tight deadlines, high stakes, and a lot of coffee—but sometimes, coping mechanisms go beyond the breakroom espresso machine. As a legal administrator, you are tasked with the ultimate juggling act: protecting the firm from risk while genuinely supporting the humans doing the heavy lifting. Join us for an engaging, jargon-free conversation on navigating workplace substance use. We’ll skip the dense clinical lectures and focus on exactly what you need: how to spot the not-so-obvious warning signs, navigate those awkward (but absolutely necessary) performance conversations, and build a resilient team culture that doesn't revolve entirely around the Friday happy hour.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Identify & Address: Recognize the subtle, often "high-functioning" warning signs of substance misuse and successfully conduct objective, performance-focused conversations.
- Mitigate Risk: Navigate the intersection of firm liability, ethical obligations, and employment compliance (ADA/FMLA) alongside HR and legal counsel.
- Provide Support: Confidently connect at-risk employees to confidential, industry-specific resources, including Lawyer Assistance Programs (LAPs) and EAPs.
- Cultivate Culture: Build a proactive, prevention-oriented environment by reducing workplace stigma and re-evaluating alcohol-centric firm traditions.
